Great Texas coaches participating in 2006

The GoFridayNight.com Champions Classic features some of the best teams in Texas, so it figures that the teams have some of the most successful coaches in Texas as well.

Saturday features two great games.  Game one may be the most highly anticipated game of the season with number nine ranked Wichita Falls Rider facing off against 7th ranked Frenship High School.

Coach Scott Ponder, Rider’s Head Coach played college ball at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls and may be the least experienced of the Champions Classic coaches. However, he has no shortage of success.  A head coach since 2001, he has been leading the Rider program since 2003.  In that short time his teams have won four district championships, four bi-district championships, three area championships, three regional championships and a state championship at Petrolia in 2002.

Brad Davis is entering his first year as coach and AD at Frenship.  A graduate of Texas Tech, Coach Davis has spent the last 20 years as an assistant coach at Frenship High

The final game of the Champions Classic weekend will feature Abilene Cooper and Weatherford High.  Cooper fans are very excited about first year head coach Mike Spradlin.  Coach Spradlin comes to cooper from the University of Houston and will bring a new offensive look that should make the Cougars tough to deal with this year.  He is a graduate of Carter High and the University of Houston where he played varsity football.  While this is his first stint as head coach here, he was an assistant at Cooper in the early 80’s.  His teams have won many championships during his career and he believes Cooper will be adding to that long list.

Mike Sneed, the Weatherford High School football coach has 23 years of coaching experience.  In those 23 years he has been named coach of the year an amazing 14 times and has coached his teams to the state championship twice.  He is a graduate of the team he now coaches, Weatherford High School and a graduate of North Texas State.  Coach Sneed has coached at Weatherford Middle School, Aledo High School, Ralls High School, and Grapevine High School and is happy to be back home as head coach at Weatherford High.

Make your plans now so that you will not miss West Texas High School Football at its best.  The second annual GoFridayNight.com Champions Classic at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene will begin Thursday, Aug. 31, and the thrills last through Saturday, Sept. 2.  Tickets will be available for each game at the gate.  Also sponsored by the Texas Chevy Dealers.
